Homeschool: Spelling Curriculum

We use a wide range of materials both online and workbooks to comprise our homeschool curriculum.  Some of  the workbooks and teacher guides I have purchased, others have been handed down to me from other moms.  One book that was given to me that I have come to appreciate is Sequential Spelling.   It is from the AVKO Educational Research Foundation.

These books take a different approach to spelling from most textbooks.  Usually the spelling words are pulled from words in the text as part of the vocabulary.  Instead Sequential Spelling teaches the patterns of spelling with sequencing and expanded forms.  Everyday the student spells a new list of words. There is no studying; there is no test.  If the student gets a word wrong, then you simply explain the spelling rule (if applicable) and have them spell it again correctly.   The standard Dolche words are grouped together in families to make words easier.

Day 2:
I
pins
sins
spins
kin
skin
win
twin

From there the text keeps building to much bigger words.  By day 5 students are spelling beginning.

The curriculum has 7 books.  Book 1 can be started in grade 2 or 3.  You can purchase the books as well as other reading and language curriculum on their site.  The books can also be found at Amazon and eBay.

  2. Do you have any recommendations for math books? I am always looking for good workbooks. I hate spending $15 or more only to find that I don't like the book after I start using it.

    Thanks!
